Scuba Diving Liveaboards: A Floating Dive Adventure, written by Sabine Testar
What is a Liveaboard?:
A scuba diving liveaboard is more than just a boat. It’s a floating hotel, dive base, and adventure hub all in one. Designed for divers, these vessels allow you to explore remote, pristine, and diverse underwater sites far beyond the reach of day boats. The main appeal? You live, eat, and dive on the ocean itself, and waking up to a new dive site every day.
Key Benefits:
> Access to remote sites: Reach reefs and wrecks far from shore and away from the crowds.
> More diving opportunities: Enjoy three to four dives a day.
> All-inclusive convenience: Meals, accommodation, and dive logistics are all taken care of.
> Community: Liveaboards foster strong bonds between divers, sharing stories, laughs, and unforgettable moments.
> typical day follows the diver’s mantra: “Eat, sleep, dive, repeat.”
My Liveaboard Experience – The Ghazala Adventure
I recently joined the Ghazala Adventure Wreck and Reef Tour for my first-ever liveaboard diving experience, and it was truly life-changing. The journey began by chance. On my way to work, I bumped into Simon, an old colleague and Chairman of Mid Herts Divers. During our chat, I learned about an upcoming Red Sea trip with the club, and before I knew it, I’d signed up. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
From PADI Beginnings to BSAC Adventures
I first completed my PADI Open Water certification almost forty years ago and have enjoyed occasional dives across Europe and the Far East. More recently, I joined BSAC and took the Advanced Ocean Diver online course. After a few pool sessions with the club in Hatfield pool David and Mark took me to Stoney Cove, where I completed my first ever cold-water dives. Interesting and an experience I am unlikely to repeat in a wetsuit in October.
Life on Board the Ghazala Adventure
Over the week, I completed 20 dives, including magical night dives. The boat was luxurious, with every comfort imaginable. Spacious cabins, stunning views, and a crew who somehow managed to prepare beautifully presented, restaurant-quality meals every day. Each dive was a new adventure: exploring haunting wrecks, drifting over colourful coral reefs, and discovering the incredible marine life of the Red Sea. The dive guides were exceptional. Knowledgeable, supportive, and always ensuring every dive was safe, well-briefed, and unforgettable.
Beyond the Diving
What made the trip truly special were the people. Sharing meals, stories, and laughter with fellow divers created a wonderful sense of camaraderie. Evenings spent under a starlit sky, gently rocked by the sea, felt completely magical.
A heartfelt thank you to Simon and the Mid Herts Divers for organising such a fantastic trip and for welcoming me so warmly into the club. I’ve learned so much, made new friends, and rediscovered my passion for diving. I can’t wait for the next liveaboard adventure, because once you’ve experienced life at sea, you are hooked!
